Chapter 20

Everything that made total and complete sense the night before sounded crazy in the light of day. Why was I going to talk to Lucas “the Octopus” Harrison again? I had no idea. He certainly wouldn’t care about a box full of trash. This was crazy. I had a better idea. I pulled the covers over my head. I could just lie here forever.

Bailey had other ideas. Using his teeth, he pulled the covers back and barked.

“I didn’t interrupt you when you were sleeping last night.” I grabbed the covers and pulled them back over my head.

I never stood much of a chance of winning the battle of the blankets against Bailey. However, when he climbed onto my chest and used his front paws as though digging to pull the covers back, I was sunk.

“Off,” I ordered once I could get my breath.

Bailey bounced back and play-bowed. His tail wagged as drool dripped from his mouth.

How could I be angry when one hundred pounds of pure joy was staring in my face? I smiled and tossed the covers over his head and wrestled with him for several minutes, just as I had when he was a puppy.

After a rousing few minutes of play, I was in a better mood. “Okay, come on. Let’s get this day started.” I led him outside and left him to sniff and play while I took my shower and got dressed.

I was still tired from lack of sleep, so I spent extra time applying my makeup to hide the under-eye bags. I spritzed and fluffed my hair as Tabby instructed. It still looked great, and I spent more time than usual admiring myself from multiple angles before heading downstairs for coffee.

I loaded the box in the back seat with Bailey and then drove to Harrison Real Estate Properties. It wasn’t far, so I found myself parked in the small lot next to the office in no time. I sat in the car staring at the redbrick building for several minutes as I tried to work through a plausible reason why I was here so early with a box of what appeared to be junk. I racked my brain, but I couldn’t come up with anything that didn’t sound phony and contrived. Eventually, I gave up, and got out. The box was light, but juggling a box and a one hundred–pound bloodhound proved too much. It was daylight and with any luck, the office would be full, so I left Bailey in the car with the windows cracked plenty and a stern warning to be on his best behavior.

I carried the box to the door and after balancing it on my knee, I managed to get the door open enough to squeeze through. Inside, I found Lucas Harrison staring at me through the glass, a lopsided grin on his face. He’d seen me struggling, but instead of coming to my aid, had merely watched in silence.

I swallowed the smart-alecky remark that was floating on the tip of my tongue and forced a smile.
